This is a close up of a piece I created a few years ago.

Hi! Welcome to my website!

I am an artist living and working in North Carolina, creating pieces with aluminum and various types of paint that “dance” as you move around them.

Whether you’re looking for available work, looking to have a commission created, or just browsing, take a look through my site. I would love to work with you!

About Me

Mason Hurlbut (b. 1996, Raleigh, North Carolina) is an American contemporary artist based in Holly Springs, North Carolina whose practice investigates the intersection of industrial materials and abstract painting. A self-taught painter with a background in welding and fabrication, Mason completed an apprenticeship in the trade between 2014 and 2018. This experience fostered an enduring appreciation for aluminum as both industrial and artistic material. Working primarily with aluminum, acrylic paint, alcohol ink, and automotive paint, he creates vibrant compositions distinguished by their luminous color, layered surfaces, and technical precision. His work has been exhibited at regional arts events including Cary Lazy Daze, Artsplosure, The Christmas Carousel, and the Fuquay-Varina En Plein Air Event and Auction. He was also the inaugural featured artist at Poke Bowl Wake Forest, reflecting the growing recognition of his work within the local arts community. Between 2021 and 2023, Mason contributed work to three charitable fundraising auctions, and his paintings are held in private and commercial collections through projects including the ongoing Interstellar series, the residential commissions Emergence and Elsewhere, the Krav Maga Raleigh logo and signage commission, multiple other commissions.

Mason is best known for his vibrant abstract paintings that explore the visual relationships between color, movement, and atmosphere, as inspired by celestial phenomena, landscapes, and urban environments. The reflective qualities of aluminum, combined with the fluidity of his paints, and the etching techniques he employs, form a distinctive material language that emphasizes luminosity, depth, and texture while reinforcing the dialogue between industrial materials and expressive abstraction.

Through both public exhibitions and commissioned works, Mason’s paintings invite viewers to consider the relationship between the built environment, the natural world, and the imagined cosmos through works that are at once materially grounded and visually expansive.
